Cheerleading Requirements

Eligibility Requirements

• Must be between 5-14 years of age as of July 15th. 
  
• Participant must have a 70%/2.0 grade point average from the previous school year
• Those not meeting the scholastic requirement may submit a Scholastic Eligibility Form, a progress report system used to monitor the participants grades throughout the season.

Welcome!

Watchung Hills Pop Warner Cheer is a nationally awarded cheer program that competes in the Central Jersey/Eastern Region. Comprised of student athletes ranging in ages from 5-14 from Warren and surrounding towns, we have a team for everyone, inclusive of all abilities.

We are proud to be offering competitive teams for cheerleaders in grades 3 to 8. Our youngest athletes (grades K-2) participate in our exhibition teams. They learn the fundamentals of cheerleading as well as get the opportunity to perform a routine at our local competition.

Tiny Mite Blue: Incoming kindergarteners and 1st graders

The Tiny Mite Blue cheer season runs from mid-August to mid-October. Practices in August will be once a week during the summer as well as after Labor Day (1-2 hours weekly). Dates and times for practices are based on facility space availability. This information will be shared with parents in August.

The Tiny Mite Blue team will perform an exhibition routine at the Central Jersey Pop Warner Cheer Competition on October 11th. Please note that the competition is mandatory.

Tiny Mite Gold: Incoming 2nd graders
The Tiny Mite Blue gold season runs from mid-August to mid-October. Practices will be 2 days weekly (1-2 hours per day) for a total of approximately 4 hours per week. Dates and times for practices are based on facility space availability. This information will be shared with parents in August.

The Tiny Mite Gold team will perform an exhibition routine at the Central Jersey Pop Warner Cheer Competition on October 11th. Please note that the competition is mandatory.

Mitey Mite, Junior Peewee, Peewee, and Junior Varsity:

Mitey Mite: Incoming 3 rd graders
Junior Peewee: Incoming 4th graders
Peewee: Incoming 5th and 6th graders
Junior Varsity: Incoming 7th and 8th graders

These competition teams will begin their season on August 3 rd and will be practicing 3 days a week for up to 6 hours a week. Dates and Times for practices are based on facility space availability. This information will be shared with parents over the summer. Competition season will begin with the Central Jersey Pop Warner Cheer Competition in Trenton, NJ on Sunday, October 11th . The teams have the opportunity to qualify to advance to Regionals which will be on October 25th , November 7th , and/or November 8 th . National competition will be the 2nd week of December (in Charlotte, NC) however the official dates have not yet been released. The teams will also compete at the New Jersey Garden State Competition which will take place on October 18th . Please note that cheerleader attendance at all their competitions is mandatory!

Commitment
Please note that cheer is a team sport and requires the commitment and dedication of all participants. The safety of all our athletes is of utmost importance and this cannot be accomplished without full participation. Cheerleaders are expected to attend all practices, clinics, games and competitions. No exceptions!

Which uniform items am I responsible for purchasing?
All cheerleaders will be provided with game day uniforms as well as competition uniforms to use for the season.  These uniforms will be returned at the end of the season and should be kept in pristine condition.

Families will be responsible for purchasing the following items (information on how to order will be provided to you by the head coach): 
1. socks
2. bloomers
3. cheer sneakers
4. long sleeve bodysuit that is worn under the uniform shell (liner)
5. practice uniforms (2-3 sets)
6. cheer bow (competition)
7. Cheer Jersey

Will all the teams cheer at the football games?
Yes! Games are held on Sundays, times and locations TBD. Attendance at all games is mandatory. We cheer rain or shine. 

Volunteering
A sign-up genius will be sent out during the weeks of home games and families are expected to volunteer at least twice in the season. In addition, we hold multiple fundraisers throughout the season to help offset the cost to run the program. All families are expected to participate as well.
